Online advertising sustains ad industry size despite economic downturn

IAB’s Ad Spend study starkly reveals how the economic downturn is accelerating a shift in the advertising landscape. The headline stat values the online ad market at £1,682.5m for the first half of 2008, an increase of 21% on the same period in 2007, proving that the online ad market is definitely still growing despite the economic downturn – and tellingly is the only relevant part of the market growing.

Changing Domains - How not to screw it up!

Thursday November 20, 2008

Changing domain names, whatever the reason is a hassle.  A big hassle. Very few people who have ever had to do it will disagree.  It can go smoothly and seemingly unnoticed, or it can result in rankings disappearing off the face of the SERPs and monumental losses of traffic.  The problem is, you’re at the mercy of the search engines and so there is no way of guaranteeing the former and avoiding the latter. Ultimately you want to make the life of search engine spiders as easy as possible - there are several steps that can be taken to help ensure this happens, the transition is smooth and impact is minimal.

Murder on the shop floor

Wednesday November 12, 2008

Firstly apologies to Sophie Ellis Bextor! However, tis the season to be jolly; the quarter that turns many a retail balance from red to black, for the seasonal tinkling of tills (both real and virtual), and the happy sound of parents weeping over their inability to get this years must have toy and the anticipation of little Poppy’s wrath at this depravation.

Social media – The online constituency

In more ways than one, US Election 2008 has placed a bookmark in American culture. Touted as the first election in history to truly embrace the reach and subsequent power of the internet, the question remains over exactly how beneficial the YouTube channels, the Twitter updates and the Facebook friends were in securing victory for the Obama campaign?

Cuil – The biggest “Google killer” flop

Monday November 10, 2008

When Cuil was launched in July 2008 it was big news, Google’s dominance in the search industry was finally going to be challenged by a serious competitor.  The pedigree was impressive, promising the world’s largest search index (121 billion indexed pages on launch), more relevant results, and promising never to store any personally identifiable information.
